Cupping

An ancient therapeutic method of pulling on fascia (bands of connective tissue beneath the skin that stabilize and enclose muscles and organs) to relieve muscle tension and pain, improve blood circulation, and help the body detox.

+ Pain
+ Sports injuries
+ Repetitive strain injuries
+ Chronic injuries
+ Muscle tension
+ Migraines
+ Fatigue
+ Cold or flu

We offer cupping therapy included in acupuncture treatments (always with your consent) at Acupoint Wellness, as a way to enhance or complement the effects of acupuncture.

While this treatment offers more obvious benefits for injuries or pain related to sports, repetitive strain, or tension, cupping also benefits those that feel anxious, overwhelmed, fatigued, or emotionally frazzled, relieves physical manifestations of chronic stress, and speeds up recovery from colds and flus.

conditions treated

Typically, silicone or glass cups are placed on the body in areas of stagnation, pain, or injury, and air is suctioned out using a pump or fire, which seals the cup against the skin. The negative pressure created pulls on your skin, fascia, and muscle tissue, bringing more blood to the area and stimulating the lymphatic system. It’s this pulling effect and increased blood flow that release tension in tight muscles and injured tissue, promote tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation.

If you’re new to cupping, the sensation can feel strange at first as you feel your muscle tissue being pulled up into the cup. This sensation can feel intense at first, but your body will quickly adapt; the feeling of your tension being pulled away becomes quite relaxing! Depending on your individual needs, your practitioner may also apply a small amount of oil to move the cups around - similar to having a massage.

As always, let your practitioner know if you are not comfortable in any way so he or she can adjust the treatment.

You may experience some skin sensitivity the day of, and cupping marks* (round and red, sometimes bruising) should be expected after your treatment. Cupping marks can last anywhere from 1-7 days. This is totally normal! If they disappear quickly, it can be an indication of good circulation in the body.

*You may want to reschedule your cupping treatment if you are going on vacation or planning on wearing a backless dress and would prefer not to have visible cupping marks.
