Also known as a sound meditation or a sound journey, a sound bath is a healing experience that uses instrumental and sometimes vocal sound - audible vibrations - to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and slow brain waves.

Essentially, this more meditative state promotes deep relaxation, balances energy, and provides opportunity for physical, emotional, and energetic release. Through the various tones and vibrations of singing bowls and other instruments, the body is aided in shifting to a higher, healing frequency.
Performed by a certified Sound Practitioner, sound therapy is designed to work alongside orthodox treatments, and is based on returning your energy field or vibration to a harmonious state. This therapy has profound positive effects on our nervous system, and whether you’re dealing with physical or emotional pain, illness, stress, or other conditions (or simply want to quiet a busy mind), sound bath healing can help you enjoy a better quality of life.
I recently attended a group Sound Bath treatment at this clinic. The staff at Acupoint Wellness Centre not only meet my expectations both with my recent (and past) sound bath treatments, but they consistently exceeded them. I’ve had acupuncture here, massage and recently sound bath treatments, and I’m always made to feel like family when I visit.
The sound vibrations used by your practitioner help to turn on the body’s relaxation response - switching from the sympathetic (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system. When activated, this system slows your heart rate and lowers blood pressure, deepens your breath, and both body and mind begin to relax.
Additionally, your brainwaves slow, shifting from the normal waking active state (Beta), through a conscious relaxed state (Alpha), down to a more dreamlike state (Theta). Some may even slow all the way to Delta, which is deep sleep. It’s within these slower brainwave states where deep healing can occur, both physically and emotionally.
Once you’ve laid down and are comfortable and cozy under your blanket, the sound practitioner will guide you through the experience. With closed eyes, you’ll experience a gentle guided meditation to support your body’s relaxation. Then, you will experience around 45 minutes of sound that will deepen the relaxation; your sound practitioner will use a variety of instruments like metal and crystal singing bowls, chimes, drums, and may also use his or her voice. Afterwards, silence will be held for a few minutes before bringing you back to the room.
Some people will experience emotional release or fall asleep during sound baths - this is normal! You may also have a sensation of floating, of energy moving through your body, tingling, temperature changes, sonic skin massage, and being transported to another time and place.
In an individual 90 minute sound bath treatment, your practitioner will spend 15 minutes at the start of the session to ask questions and get a sense of your individual needs, followed by 60 minutes of sound, and another 15 minutes to debrief, answer questions, and discuss your experience.
It is helpful to keep well-hydrated for several hours (or a full day) before a sound bath session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without belts.
If you are pregnant, please let your practitioner know. Sound bath healing is completely safe during pregnancy, but bowls will not be used close to the body.
Take your time and try not to schedule anything too intense right after your session - a tea or light stretch is the perfect way to gently come back from the trance state. Most people will feel calm and relaxed following treatment, and for some, this feeling will last several days. As physical detoxing is also happening, we advise to drink plenty of water in the following days.
